Joseph H. Pilates in his eightieth year
The New York Public Library Digital Collections
What is the Contrology/Pilates method?
In 1929, Joseph Pilates started a studio in New York City to practice Contrology and named it "Pilates"
He introduced a group of exercises that can be performed on a mat, known as Mat Pilates , and pieces of equipment, known as Reformer & Apparatus Pilates , which he designed himself with precise measurements and features.
Pilates incorporated six principles in his book Return to life through Contrology:
Classical vs Contemporary Pilates
After Joseph Pilates's death in 1967, people started changing the original Contrology methods and added new types of exercises to it.
Now the original Contrology is known as Classical Pilates and the altered version of Pilates is known as Contemporary Pilates.
Classical Pilates
Stays true to Joseph Pilates' original system. It follows the precise sequence, principles, and techniques he designed, allowing the body to progress in a balanced and structured way.
Contemporary Pilates
Draws inspiration from the original method but introduces modifications, variations, and modern fitness trends. While this can offer creativity and variety, it often changes the structure of the original system.
